WELCOME TO THE HOMEPAGE OF TARTU STUDENTS' CHOIR!

Tartu Students’ Choir is one of the oldest students’ musical bodies in Estonia. In 1905 a young student named Leenart Neumann called together the first mixed choir in Estonia consisted only of Estonian singers. Outstanding Estonian composers like Juhan Aavik, Alfred Karindi and Enn Võrk have conducted the choir. For the last 30 years Valli Ilvik has worked as the conductor of the choir. Our choir works in Tartu, in a university town in the Southern Estonia. The singers are mostly undergraduate, master and doctoral students mainly from University of Tartu and Estonian University of Life Sciences and other colleges. At the moment the number of singers is about 50. Singing in a choir enables young people not only to practice choir music, but also to find new friends and occasionally to travel abroad.
Our choir has made several concert tours in Estonia and all over the Europe. We take part in traditional singing festivals in Estonia and also student’s singing festivals around the Baltics. We have also participated in the international choir festivals and competitions and we have been successful.
Our repertoire comprises of rather different kinds of choir music, including modern and classical music, spirituals, Estonian and other nations folk music. We sing in Estonian, English, German, Finnish, Spanish and Latin. We have given concerts together with other choirs from Tartu and even with Finnish and American students. Students’ singing is something special – it has brightness, power and joy of the youth. Singing has always been an important part of student life in Estonia. Our choir aims at keeping the glorious traditions of Estonian choir music and offer a possibility for students to pleasantly spend time for a change their lectures.
